A TEC is not a THED

Fitting a TEC where a THED belongs removes the overload element from that circuit. Fitting a THED where a TEC belongs adds a thermal element to a circuit already protected by a starter overload, which is likely to nuisance trip on motor starting current. Neither is a substitution we publish.

Magnetic only is deliberate, not a cheaper option

A motor draws several times its running current for the first moments of a start. A thermal element sized to protect the motor in normal running will see that inrush and may trip on it. So on a motor circuit the protection is often split: the breaker handles short circuit with a magnetic trip only, and the starter overload relay handles sustained overload with heaters chosen for the motor.

As with the THED block, the last three digits of the GE reference are the ampere rating, and the RHCC numbers do not run in the same order as the ratings. That mismatch is exactly why a stores number and a catalogue number both need to be on the same page.

What to send with your request

Tell us what it works with, because on a motor circuit the breaker is half of a scheme.

  • The ampere rating and any trip setting marked on the existing device
  • The starter and overload relay the breaker works with, if you know them
  • A photograph of the breaker label showing the catalogue number and any suffix
  • Whether you are replacing after a fault or as part of a planned rebuild
  • Quantity required, the condition you can accept, and your need-by date

We do not need a purchase order to answer an identification question. Send the number and the photograph and we will tell you what we can establish.

Questions we get on this number

What are the trip settings?
Independent listings publish a low position of 90 and a high position of 390 for this reference, with a 10 kA interrupting rating at 480 V. Where to set it for a given motor is an engineering decision and we do not publish a recommendation.
Is it still made?
Seller listings describe the reference as discontinued by the manufacturer. That is their statement, reported here because it is useful to a buyer. It says nothing about what can be obtained, which is a question we answer per request.
