VFD Repair vs. Replace

A failed drive doesn't always mean a new one. The options — repair, reman exchange, new-surplus drop-in, or upgrade — and how to choose.

When a variable frequency drive fails, you have more than one move. Edmundson Industrial helps you weigh repair, reman (reconditioned) exchange, a new-surplus drop-in, or an upgrade to a current drive — by how fast you need it running, what's available, and total cost. Send the drive catalog number off the nameplate and we'll lay out the options.

Independent sourcing, not an authorized distributor. We supply new-surplus, used-tested, reconditioned, and sourced-to-order drives, with condition disclosed before sale.

Your options

OptionBest whenWhat we do
New-surplus drop-inFastest restart; exact catalog match availableWe source the exact catalog number, unused, from the secondary market.
Used-tested drop-inLower cost; the current model isn't requiredTested unit, condition disclosed with photos.
Reman / reconditioned exchangeYou want a refurbished unit with a core returnWe source a reconditioned drive and arrange the core exchange where available.
RepairThe drive is rare or obsolete and worth fixingWe route board- and unit-level repair through our network.
UpgradeThe drive is obsolete; you'd rather modernizeWe cross-reference to the current replacement (e.g. PowerFlex 40525) and supply adapter plates via fabrication.

How to decide

Obsolete drive? We cross-reference it to the modern replacement and source the original as surplus. See the brand hubs on the VFD hubABB ACS, Yaskawa, Siemens — and SCR & DC drive systems.

How we quote your options

  1. Send the drive catalog number off the nameplate, or the motor HP and voltage.
  2. We lay out the paths — new-surplus, used-tested, reman exchange, repair, or upgrade — with availability for each.
  3. We quote condition, price, and lead time per option — same-day on most requests.

FAQ

Should I repair or replace a failed VFD?
If the exact drive is current or available as new-surplus, a drop-in is usually fastest. If the drive is obsolete and rare, repair or a reman exchange can be the better value. Send the catalog number and we lay out availability and cost for each path.
What is a reman or reconditioned exchange?
A reconditioned drive supplied in exchange for your failed unit, where an exchange program is available. We source the reconditioned drive and arrange the core return where possible. Condition is disclosed before sale.
Can you supply an adapter so a new drive fits the old footprint?
Yes. When the replacement changes the mounting, our fabrication side supplies adapter plates, sub-panels, and modified enclosures so the new drive mounts where the old one came out.
Are you an authorized distributor?
No. Edmundson Industrial is an independent surplus and sourcing company, not an authorized distributor. We supply new-surplus, used-tested, reconditioned, and sourced-to-order with condition disclosed before sale.
