Drilling Rig SCR Houses
SCR houses, SCR bays, and the equipment inside them. Ross Hill and NOV Model 1400 and 1500 systems: sourcing, components, rebuild support, and custom fabrication.
Independent sourcing, not an authorized distributor. Ross Hill, NOV, and other manufacturer names are used for reference only. We supply new-surplus, used-tested, and reconditioned equipment with condition disclosed before sale, and we fabricate enclosures, panels, and assemblies in house. Complete-system requirements are sourced and quoted case by case: tell us the scope and we will tell you honestly what we can put together.
What is an SCR house, actually?
An SCR house is the electrical heart of a diesel-electric drilling rig. Engine-generator sets feed AC into the house; inside, silicon controlled rectifier bridges convert that AC into variable DC, and assignment switching routes it to the equipment that needs it: drawworks, mud pumps, rotary table. The driller's console commands it, and the control modules regulate it.
Everything else on a mechanical rig can be running perfectly. If the SCR house is down, the rig is down. That is why this equipment gets sourced urgently, and why a house that has sat in a yard for three years is still worth moving across the country.
What we supply
We work across the whole assembly rather than one line of it:
- Complete systems and bays: sourced to order against your scope. Availability on complete houses moves constantly; we will tell you what is genuinely findable rather than quote something we cannot deliver.
- SCR bays and power conversion: bridges, phase cells, pucks, semiconductor fuses, snubbers.
- Control modules: Ross Hill and NOV AC and DC control modules, exciter and field supply boards, power limit controllers.
- Driller's and mud pump consoles: complete assemblies and individual boards.
- Switchgear, contactors, and distribution: breakers, DC contactors, transformers, grid resistor banks.
- Custom fabrication: enclosures, panels, mounting plates, brackets, and modified assemblies in steel, aluminum, and stainless. When a replacement does not drop into the footprint the old unit came out of, we make it fit.
What is the difference between Model 1400 and Model 1500?
The Ross Hill Model 1400 and Model 1500 are the two generations most commonly still in service. They are not interchangeable at the component level: phase cells in particular differ between generations, and assuming otherwise is an expensive way to find out.

SCR or VFD?
If you are specifying rig power from scratch, this is the decision that comes first, and it is not automatic. SCR is not simply the old way. See SCR vs VFD for drilling rigs for the honest trade-offs.
Buying a used SCR house?
Most SCR houses change hands used. What you inspect before committing determines whether you bought equipment or a project. Our SCR house buying guide covers what to check, what is routine to fix, and what should stop the deal.
Rebuild and retrofit
A tired house is often worth rebuilding rather than replacing, particularly when the structure and bays are sound and the control section is the problem. See rebuild and retrofit.
