Before you travel
- Model generation and manufacturer — Ross Hill, NOV, or another builder, and which generation.
- Number of SCR bays and what they were assigned to.
- Photographs of every nameplate, every bay, and the console. Plate photos matter more than a walkthrough video.
- Why it came out of service. A house pulled from a stacked rig is a different proposition from one pulled after a fault.
- Whether it has been stored indoors, outdoors, or energized periodically.
On site: structure and environment
- Roof and seal integrity. Water is the single most destructive thing that happens to stored houses.
- Corrosion at the base, cable entries, and door frames.
- Evidence of rodents and insects. Nesting in a bay is common and costly.
- HVAC and pressurization equipment — frequently missing, stripped, or long dead.
On site: power section
- Bays open and inspected. Look for discoloration, heat damage, cracked insulators, and burned snubber resistors.
- Semiconductor fuses present and intact — and whether spares came with the house.
- Blowers and filters. Turn them by hand. Thermally limited equipment with degraded cooling will disappoint you.
- Grid resistor banks: cracked, open, or distorted elements.
- Contactors: contact condition, and whether coil voltages match what you will supply.
On site: control section
- Every control module physically present. Missing modules are common and are the expensive part of the purchase.
- Write down every module part number and dash suffix. On some Ross Hill items the dash suffix is an engine calibration, not a revision — a module that fits mechanically may be calibrated for the wrong engine.
- Console boards present, and console wiring intact rather than cut at the gland plate.
- Spare boards on the shelf inside — frequently overlooked and genuinely valuable.
Documentation
Schematics, assembly drawings, and the original parts list add real value and are routinely lost. A house with complete drawings is worth meaningfully more than an identical one without, because troubleshooting time on undocumented equipment is where budgets disappear.

What is the most commonly overlooked item on a used SCR house?
Missing control modules, and cooling. Modules are the expensive gap; degraded blowers and filters cause problems that get misdiagnosed as device failures for years.
Is water damage always fatal?
Not always, but it is the finding that most often justifies walking away. Water in the bays affects insulation, connections, and devices in ways that are difficult to fully assess in a yard.
Should I buy a house without drawings?
You can, but price it accordingly. Undocumented equipment costs more to troubleshoot over its life.
