A DC drilling motor develops torque from armature current acting against motor field. The field supply card provides that field. Because field weakening is how these drives reach higher speed, a fault here shows up as a speed and torque problem rather than an obvious electrical failure — a motor that will not reach speed, or one that runs away above base speed.
